I had listened to this song several times when the album came out. For some reason it always made me sad; especially
after I had finally seen the video with the scene creating the illusion of either a boat of men or men wading in the water
holding their guns in the air going down the river or crossing it. It kept making me think of their other song “Brothers In Arms.”
hmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmm yeah & no… I have never allowed myself to be mortal/human,,, as I thought… Lately, what I thought was a tower of strength has proven to be a tower of isolation.
I have listened to the Dire Straits songs over & over (Ride Across The River & Brothers In Arms); I am one who can really
see images as I listen to words & the manner in which it is sung. With these two songs I always think of my young cousins
& friends who were just boys who wanted to perform what they felt were their patriotic duty, see other parts of the world,
get paid & send monies home to their families & of course look grand in a military uniform. However, they never realized how
horrific their experiences would be or the horrific things they’d see & do. The ones who would return left as young boys only
to return as broken men. Of course throughout every soldier’s life; some were able to return & become senators, governors,
etc; but I know there is a part of their lives that was never the same. Sorry to go on like this but I have several relatives who
I’ve seen & listened to, have a difficult time from this. They are haunted by things they wish they could forget.
well…I tend to smile through my tears; and those relatives & friends I mentioned, do the same at times.
There is always a message in our music we hold so dear to our hearts.

This is a great compilation of early Dylan stuff, (Before he was electrified) & a unique piece on the tube.
